Kelowna is no longer just home to fabulous wineries, but also has a burgeoning craft brewery scene. In their sit-down tasting rooms, try tank-to-tap craft beer and learn how a small batch microbrewery creates their selection of wonderful beer. Kelowna’s downtown is where you will find a number of breweries within walking distance of one another.
The Tree Beer Institute (1346 Water St) is located at the Delta Grand by Marriott Hotel. The first craft brewery in Kelowna, they were sampling beer in 1996. The tank to tap line up is served unfiltered, displaying pronounced aromas and complex flavours. The offerings are year-round, seasonal and limited release. With a variety to choose from, there is something for everyone’s taste. Tree also has delicious beer inspired food, such as pizza, chips and donuts.
B.N.A. Brewing Co. (1250 Ellis) is housed in a building steeped in history. The British North America Tobacco Company brought the tobacco industry to Kelowna in the early 1900’s. The BNA building was used to dry tobacco leaves and roll cigars. Then the Occidental Fruit Company took over the space and opened a cannery. Not only can you find amazing craft beer here, but also a great menu of seasonal and local dishes which support local farmers and businesses.
The Kettle River Brewing Co. (731 Baillie Ave) is tucked away in Kelowna’s North End, is a small batch neighbourhood brewery. They proudly offer three flagship beers and are constantly experimenting with new recipes resulting in an ever-changing collection of beers on tap. The name of the brewery came from the roots of the founding owner, who grew up in Grand Forks on the Kettle River.
The newest microbrewery downtown is Red Bird Brewing Inc. (1086 Richter St) where they are passionate about beer and conversation. Enjoy a quiet evening with friends conversing in the comfortable intimate setting. Although their own brew is not yet available, they have a variety of drinks for all different tastes.
If you would like a change from beer, try BC Tree Fruits Cider Company’s (880 Vaughan Ave) Broken Ladder cider. Their hand crafted premium cider is made from 100% BC apples. Each of their ciders is crisp, clean and pure, with no artificial flavours, added water or sugar. Try the original cider blended with 6 apple varieties, the blend of BC pears and peaches or finally the dry hopped cider. The cidery is located next to the BC Tree Fruits retail marketplace where you can purchase fresh seasonal local produce.
